Everything, by distance
| Where | Driving | What for |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Skadar (Virpazar) | 30 min | Pelicans, boat trips, wine cellars |
| Ostrog monastery | 40 min | Built into a cliff, 900 m up |
| Cetinje | 40 min | The old capital, museums, monastery |
| Budva / the coast | 1 h 10 | Beaches, old town |
| Kolašin | 1 h 15 | Mountains, Biogradska Gora |
| Kotor | 1 h 30 | The bay, the walls |
| Durmitor / Žabljak | 2 h 15 | Too far for a comfortable day |
No coastal base can match that spread. From Kotor, Lake Skadar is an hour and forty and Kolašin is two and a half. From Podgorica, both are close.
The three that are genuinely good
Lake Skadar at thirty minutes is the closest serious thing to any city in the country. Boat from Virpazar at dawn for €20 to €30, pelicans and pygmy cormorants, then a family wine cellar in the Crmnica hills afterwards for €8 to €15 with a plate of ham.
Ostrog at forty minutes — the upper monastery cut into the cliff, dress code enforced, free entry. Combine with the Nikšić road and Piva if you have the day.
Cetinje at forty minutes — the old royal capital, the embassies of the powers, the monastery, King Nikola's palace. Under €12 for a combined museum ticket. Continue up to Lovćen and the Njegoš mausoleum for a full day.
The one nobody does
The Morača canyon, on the road north. The Morača monastery at the mouth of it dates from 1252 and holds thirteenth-century frescoes, and it sits directly beside the road with a car park. Almost everyone driving to Kolašin passes it at speed.
Twenty minutes there, free, and one of the oldest things in the country.
Podgorica itself, briefly
It was flattened in 1944 and rebuilt as a socialist city, which is why it looks the way it does. What is worth an hour: the Ribnica bridge and the Ottoman old town remnant, the Millennium Bridge, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the enormous Cathedral of the Resurrection with its unusual modern frescoes.
It is hot — 40 degrees in July is normal, several degrees above the coast — and it empties in August when everybody goes to the sea.
Why base here
- Accommodation is half the coastal price in summer
- The airport is 15 minutes away
- The railway reaches the north and the coast
- No August crowd — the city is at its emptiest when the coast is fullest
- Restaurants are for locals, priced accordingly
The trade is that you are not by the sea, and on a beach holiday that is decisive. On a trip that is mostly about the country rather than the coast, it is the efficient choice.
