The mistake is treating a small country as a quick one. Ninety kilometres of coast road in August takes three hours. The honest plan picks two regions and gives each of them a real day.
Day 1 — Boka
- Before 09:00: Kotor old town, while it is still empty. The walls if you have the legs — 1,350 steps, about an hour up.
- Late morning: drive to Perast, 12 km. Boat to Our Lady of the Rocks, €5 return from the waterfront.
- Afternoon: Lovćen by the Kotor serpentine. Twenty-five hairpins, the whole bay behind you. Njegoš's mausoleum at the top is 461 steps through a tunnel.
- Evening: back down to Kotor for dinner, when the ships have gone.
Sleep in Kotor or Perast. Perast is quieter and prettier; Kotor has more to eat.
Day 2 — north to Durmitor
This is the long drive and it should be treated as the day's main event rather than something to get through. Kotor to Žabljak is about four hours the scenic way, via Nikšić and the Piva canyon.
- Ostrog monastery on the way, cut into a cliff nine hundred metres up. An hour, dress code enforced.
- The Piva canyon road — 56 tunnels, most unlit, the reservoir turquoise below.
- Đurđevića Tara bridge in the late afternoon. 172 metres above the river.
- Sleep in Žabljak.
Day 3 — Durmitor, then out
Black Lake in the morning: the flat circuit is 3.5 km and an hour, park entry €3. If you want the mountain rather than the postcard, the path towards Crvena greda takes most of the day and repays it.
Then the drive out. Žabljak to Podgorica airport is 2 h 15 by the Tara canyon road, which is the better road and the better view. To Tivat is three hours.
What this leaves out, on purpose
- Budva and the southern beaches. Adding them means an extra two hours of driving and losing the north.
- Lake Skadar. Worth a day of its own, not an hour on the way past.
- Rafting the Tara. A half day on the water is 3 hours plus transfers — it replaces the Durmitor morning rather than fitting beside it.
If rafting is the reason for the trip north, the half-day 14 km run from Žabljak is the one that fits into an already-full three days.
If the beach is the point of the trip, invert this: two days on the coast between Budva and Ulcinj, one day up to Lovćen and Cetinje, and leave the north for next time. Trying to have both in three days is how people end up remembering the car.
